Lev Vygotsky’s theory had an impact on early childhood development through the belief that play is an essential part of language development, with language being the prime tool for communication, and how the child understands the external world.  When a child is at play, they are in constant conversation with self or playmates.  Through the cognitive process where transition from other-regulated to self-regulated realizing language through play is an essential part of the transition.

Being social is the first stage of development according to Vygotsky. Children that listen to parents socialize, listen to their speech and try to imitate them is the social interaction that is important for a child to develop. As the child is learning imitation, parents correct and provide the knowledge of right and wrong.  Children become competent in their word choice began to think on their own through the form of play.

A child who does not engage in play or use their imagination to create a form of play is not developing the language and reasoning skills that are special to early child development. Play give children the chance to practice fine motor skills such as gripping objects and also gross motor skills such as walking, running and jumping. Play is used as a development skill in small children which transfer into what is need as adults, with lack of play as a child proper developmental skills will lack as well.
